Reflection for Sunday, Nov. 29

If you watch the news, very often you notice how quickly the world moves from Halloween to Thanksgiving to greetings for the Season and possibly, a Merry Christmas.

My point is, we are a fast-moving world. We need to stop and be attentive. Advent Season is about watchfulness. Be present to the moment, with hope for tomorrow.

In the Gospel for this first Sunday of Advent, Jesus encourages the disciples to watch and wait by using a parable of the master who leaves the house for an undetermined amount of time. Jesus reminds his disciples to pay attention.

In the second reading, Paul reminds us what our hope is, “you are lacking in no spiritual gift”, therefore remember you are called and sent by God to minister in our world. We do not know the day or the hour. I love also the way that Paul speaks when he says, ”On the day of our Lord, God is faithful.”

I have often seen people who live in discouragement and fear. These are not good places for us. Advent is about the opposite. It is a time of preparation for the great event of the Birth of Jesus. It is a time to pay attention to what is really important in life. It is a time to be attentive, to spiritually care for yourself, and to reach out to others.

Finally, we don’t have to look too far. Each family I know is in need. We need light and encouragement. We need forgiveness and we need to listen better to those we love. This is a great Season of Hope. Be careful of the daily news!
