Reflection for December 2
When Jesus came down from the mountain and began ministering to the crowds, he performed many miracles like cleansing a leper, healing a paralytic, and bringing a young girl back to life. So, it’s no surprise that the two blind men sought Jesus out and pleaded with him to open their eyes.
I wonder if the men were truly blind or suffered from a lack of faith? Biblical references to the lack of eyesight are used frequently as a metaphor for spiritual blindness. For example, Matthew 6:22-23 says, “The eye is the lamp of the body, so if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” And in John 9:39-41, Jesus said “… I came into this world, that those who do not see may see…”
Many have impugned the two men for not heeding Jesus’ admonition to “see that no one knows about this.” But I have a different thought on the matter. Cured of their spiritual blindness, they would have been more inclined not to talk about how Jesus cured them, but rather joyfully shared with others how their faith was restored by Jesus’ unconditional love and compassion.
This reading made me wonder: How is our spiritual eyesight in 2022?
How well are we treating each other or God’s creation?
