Reflection for December 1

Gospel - Matthew 7:21, 24-27

The parable in this gospel is probably one of the clearest and easiest to understand because we can relate to the visual image. We can picture a house firmly built and sitting solidly on a rock. We can also picture a house built on sand or in an area where it can easily be toppled. In fact, today we can see the results of storms and wind to homes. With the new requirements placed on rebuilding homes that have been destroyed, they are more solid and can withstand the tortures of Mother Nature.

Interestingly, Luke also tells this parable with a bit of a different focus. He speaks of “the foundation” and its necessary strength. Matthew speaks to listening and acting on what Christ wants us to do and be, and in doing so shows us that He has been given the authority to speak on His Father’s behalf.

Both writers have good perspectives … we must build our faith on a strong foundation … one that can withstand the stresses of today. We are constantly placed in a position where we must choose the path we are on. Temptations abound as well as life’s trials, yet having a firm foundation of trust, faith, and belief, we can weather the storms.

Matthew’s version speaks to listening and doing … acting on Jesus’s words. The acting is the hard part! It is easy to listen, but to turn that listening into action-caring for the poor, the environment, and those alone, loving our enemies and not judging … this is the difficult part. Advent is the perfect time to create an action plan. What can we each do to live the words we hear so we can work toward having our foundation on solid ground?
