Reflection for January 4

Jesus turned and said to them:
“What are you looking for?...”
“Come and you will see.”
The disciples were curious about Jesus’ invitation and followed him. They chose to say yes and take a step forward into mystery. Their lives were changed as they followed and trusted him.
I remember hearing the invitation to attend my first women’s retreat at Holy Family 35 years ago. Our children were young. Not knowing what to expect, I took that step forward and left for my weekend there. The themed talks and times in the chapel with beautiful music nourished my spirit, while delicious meals fed me. My weekend retreat became an annual tradition and a special time to listen. It led to serving on the youth retreat team which I greatly enjoyed.
Taking time in prayer to listen to the Spirit’s invitations can move us to unexpected places of growth, joy and purpose.
Today is the feast of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. After losing her husband at a young age and with five children, she listened to God’s guidance and went on to establish the Sisters of Charity and the first Catholic schools in the US.
What are you looking for in this new year?
I’m wondering where Jesus may be saying to you,“Come and you will see.”
