Reflection for January 3
Deborah Leonard, Sunlight on the Water
John the Baptist sought the attention of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to commend Him for His actions. The reason we baptize Roman Catholics with holy water today is because John performed this action upon Jesus. The five words, “𝐼 𝑑𝑖𝑑 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 ℎ𝑖𝑚” brings to our attention that ALL are welcome. Baptism is the very first sacrament Roman Catholics can receive. No sacrament shall be received upon any Catholic before baptism. Baptism also clears away all sins the person being baptized had performed in the past. But that does not mean sin is impossible to perform afterwards. We always have to watch and be mindful of what we do.
