Reflection for Sunday, Dec. 20
Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the Sunday of Peace, and Christmas is near. Advent is almost over, and our long wait for the birth of Jesus is almost at an end. In today's second reading, I think that Paul has a direct message for us. He tells us that the Gospel, the Good news from Christ, strengthens us. It keeps us steady in a world full of strife. The overall message of the reading that I want to share with you is that through the mystery - the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ - we faithfully listen to God's word. God wants us to be secure.
So how does this connect to the Fourth Sunday of Advent and peace? I had to think about it for a while and then I realized that I know God wants us to be solid in His word, to live apart from sin, and to live in peace above all. But sometimes I think that is where people get stuck. With so many difficulties happening all around the world, especially now, the easiest thing to remember is that peace begins close by. It starts in your own home with yourself and your family. As Christians, we understand the mystery that the reading talks about. It is the good news that Christ came and died for us and will return. But in the meantime, we should try to live a Christian life of peace and always give glory to God.
While the word Advent means coming, we know Advent as a period of time and as a journey where we prepare for Christ. Now that Advent is coming to an end, take time to reflect on your journey, seek peace, and praise God. Merry Christmas.
