Reflection for Tuesday, Dec. 21
“Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come!” (Sg 2:13)
“Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” (Lk 1:45)
It seems that the Lord of heaven and earth wants to show us, the beloved and beautiful, the flowers springing up after the rains, the beauty of creation. Not only that, but God has promises for us. And blessed are we who believe in the fulfillment of God’s promises. Does belief matter? After all, Zechariah and Elizabeth still had a baby, even though Zechariah did not believe this was possible. Apparently, our belief, or lack thereof, does not negate God’s promises. This is a good thing, since despite what felt like a deep reassurance, a promise from God at the start, that we would one day have children, more times than I could count I suffered despair and doubt before welcoming our own beloved son, and years later, two more. God does not require our belief. However, belief lights up our lives and makes us truly blessed.
