Reflection for Friday, Dec. 4

Today’s gospel shouts “BELIEVE!” That message is so much a part of Christmas, both in the religious and the secular world. Certainly, parents and children around the world are keeping the spirit of Santa alive by “believing” in him. Jesus also encourages us to believe in him, as he did the blind men who approached him. They cried out for pity, and he replied, “Do you believe that I can do this?” Of course – they were believers – and their faith healed them.

A strong faith enables us to BELIEVE in that which we cannot see – to trust the unseen God. It strikes me that believing, and having faith, are very much the same thing.

Dear God, I believe! Strengthen my faith and open my eyes to see you working in the world around me. Open my heart during this Advent season and help me live life as one who believes!
