Karen Israel and Jane Penfield
Whether you have had experience with pastels or not, in this class you will learn and create a work of art using pastels. Karen and Jane are experienced, professional artists and will help you to understand the medium and how it can work for you! No experience is necessary. All materials are included.

Presenter Profile
Karen Israel
Karen Israel is an experienced teacher in pastel technique and the principles of art, and she enjoys seeing the enormous progress made by her students. Over the years, her work has won numerous awards in national and international juried exhibits, dating back to 2011. In 2019, Karen’s work won Best in Show at the Pastel Society of the West Coast’s National exhibit and the Flora Giffuni Memorial Award with the American Artist’s Professional League. In June 2020, Karen was a featured artist on Artsy and her work has placed in the Pastel Journal magazine’s top 100 in 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2021. Karen's work is featured in Practique Des Arts, vol. 153, Sept 2020 and vol. 47, April 2018. Her five pastels were honored with their inclusion in an exhibition at Pastels of the World in Bourbonnais, France in May 2022. This exhibit honors American women pastelists. Karen's work has been included in a traveling exhibit at the Lyman Allyn Museum, the New Haven Museum, and the Connecticut River Museum. Her work is part of the permanent collection at the New Haven Paint and Clay Club.
Jane Penfield
Jane Penfield is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and the Connecticut Pastel Society. She has just completed a three-year term as President of the Connecticut Pastel Society and is also past president of Arts Center East in Vernon, CT. Jane is inspired by nature, as well as by the human influence on it, especially elements that evoke light, drama, and emotion. Her work is an impression of light and life as she has experienced it through walking, travel, and direct observation. She finds great joy in the creative process and in teaching. In addition to offering a weekly pastel class online, she frequently presents demos and workshops for art groups.
