Reflection for December 27

Gospel - John 20:1a and 2-8

One of my favorite words associated with Christmas is Believe! It transcends the conflict between the religious and the secular nature of how people celebrate the holiday – there’s something for everyone, whether you believe in Christ or in Santa Claus.

The gospel from John, though, takes us back to the day that Jesus was discovered missing from the tomb. I’m struck by Mary Magdalene running to tell the disciples; the disciples practically racing to see who could get there first and finding that the tomb was empty. John writes that they “saw and believed” – no questions asked.

My prayer this Christmas is that we not waiver in our belief – in faith, in justice, and in Christ –Wonderful, Counselor, Almighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Believe!
