Reflection for Sunday, Dec. 5

Who among us doesn’t love to travel? Personally, I love a good road trip. There is an excitement in visiting friends and family, seeing new places, erasing the miles that separate us. The logistics of travel can be challenging and exhausting, but it is always worth the effort. With the recent pandemic (mostly) behind us, are you planning to travel during the coming holiday season? Then the idea of a journey is on your mind.

The Gospel of Luke takes us on Jesus’ journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. Sources believe it was written to be read aloud to a group of Jesus’ followers gathered in a house to share the Lord's supper. This passage begins by grounding us in historical data that also alludes to the political nature of the time. John is fulfilling his mission as he preaches a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. This context is important, but the vision that lingers with me is that of a journey:

“Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.

Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low.

The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

Our spiritual journey may not always be smooth, but the reward is great. As we enter into this season of Advent, settle in, and enjoy the journey, for we will celebrate the birth of Christ, our savior, on Christmas Day.
