Reflection for Sunday, January 3
“Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” (Matthew 2:2)
One image that sticks with me from today’s reading is the image of the star. Nowadays, it is difficult to see a lot of stars at night because of our streetlights. But the three magi did see a star and wondered at it. They believed it was real, something they could follow. These three stargazers journeyed together. They were not afraid to ask for directions.
These three men were still able to recognize the miracle – the newborn king of the Jews – even when it did not meet their expectations. Indeed, they rejoiced and presented Mary with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Do we have stars, special goals, or dreams? Do we believe in them enough to take steps to follow them? Are we able to seek help and ask for directions? And when we finally reach our goals, are we able to appreciate it and thank God even if it may not have met all our expectations? Through it all, may our paths lead us to God, the true Star of Bethlehem.
